The Denver area is home to some great metro parks. Today we are going to explore two that reside near some of the great neighborhoods in the Denver Colorado area.

Sloans Lake

Sloan’s Lake is located on the Northwest side of Denver Colorado. The park is the second largest in Denver, behind City Park. Sloan’s lake is home to a variety of wildlife including pelicans, ducks, geese and seagulls. The fish population in the lake consists of black crappie, carp and trout. The lake is stocked with trout by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Agency.

Sloan’s lake has a wonderful walking path that encircles the lake. The path is 2.6 miles around and is wheelchair accessible. Sloan’s lake also has a boat ramp, playground and rentals. The park has great views of the mountains and the city skyline.

Sloan’s Lake is home to one of Colorado’s greatest festivals with the Dragon Boat Festival. The festival will be in its 17th year in 2017. It is a celebration of Asian-American culture and features great food, activities, arts and of course boats.

Washington Park

Washington Park is located in South Central Denver Colorado. Covering¬† 165 acres making it slightly smaller than Sloan’s Lake, but it also is one of the largest parks in the Denver area. It was awarded the “Great Public Spaces” honor by the American Planning Association in 2012. The park features two lakes and many wide open spaces to enjoy.

Washington Park is often referred to as “Wash Park” by locals. The park not only has wonderful outdoor attractions but also boasts a modern rec. center with pool, gym and playgrounds. The park has a 2.6 mile jogging trail and has great spaces and trails for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
